is it possible to repair/upgrade a digital multimeter?

i was wondering is it possible for a electronics hobbiest to repair or possibly upgrade a digital multimeter. i know there are some cheap kinds out there made by china that have cheap parts and dont last for a long time and i was wondering if all the parts in it can be replaced with better parts to work better and last longer? thanks

It's not worth the effort. The thing that is most likely to fail in a cheap meter is the mechanical parts like the switches and the probes. You can't easily upgrade them, because they will be designed for that particular type of meter and not easily available as spare parts.

You can certainly build your own DMM if you want. The main ICs and displays are standard parts that you can buy from any good component supplier. But you won't save much money compared with buying one ready built.

Like everything else you get what you pay for. It shouldn't be a surprise that a DMM that costs $1000 is probably better built, more accurate, and harder to destroy by accident than one that costs $10. That's why professional labs use instruments that cost $1000. On the other hand, if electronics is your hobby and not your profession, $10 meters than maybe only last a couple of years are probably the most cost effective thing to buy - and having 3 or 4 cheap meters available can be much more useful than only having one expensive one.
