In a bicolor LED, is the middle lead the ground?

There are two types of devices that are commonly called "bicolor LEDs."

A true bicolor LED is of the bipolar type, and has only two leads. If current is applied in one polarity, the LED emits one color of light, and if the opposite polarity is applied, the LED emits the other color.

There are also common-anode and common-cathode LEDs in which two separate LEDs are housed in one case, with either the cathodes or the anodes being tied together inside the case.

In the case of these common-lead LEDs, the center lead is the common lead, either anode or cathode. The side leads are the opposite poles of the two LEDs.
